Mexican quarterfinal places decided in last round

MEXICO CITY (AP) -Morelia, Cruz Azul, Monterrey and Chivas all advanced to the Mexican Apertura football championship quarterfinals after the weekend's final round of the regular season matches.

Toluca finished the season in first place after its 2-0 victory over San Luis on Saturday and will play Chivas in the quarterfinals. Runner-up Tijuana faces Monterrey, Leon hosts Cruz Azul and America plays Morelia.

The quarterfinals first-leg matches are scheduled to be played on Wednesday and Thursday, with the return legs next Saturday and Sunday.

Last season*s Clausura champion, Santos Laguna, failed to make the playoffs after falling 2-0 to Morelia on Friday, with Miguel Sabah scoring in each half.

Jaguares and Tigres also had the chance to make the playoffs, but neither managed to win their final matches.
