New coach Aguirre promises to save Espanyol

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre says he is committed to rescuing Spanish club Espanyol from relegation.

Aguirre said at his presentation as the team's new coach on Thursday that last-place Espanyol "has to be saved and it will be saved.''

Espanyol ended coach Mauricio Pochettino's four-season stint after the team won just two of its first 13 games to sit two points from safety.

Aguirre said that Sunday's match at Granada was key to "boosting morale'' with a win, adding "we are working against the clock. There are 75 points left in play and we have to do whatever it takes.''

Espanyol is the fourth of Spain's topflight clubs that Aguirre has coached. The others were Osasuna, Atletico Madrid and Real Zaragoza, which fired him in December 2011.
