NYON, Switzerland (AP) -The German football association says it will propose its president as a candidate in UEFA executive committee elections next May.

Wolfgang Niersbach, a former football journalist, can be nominated because German delegate Theo Zwanziger will leave after completing his four-year term.

If elected, Niersbach will help choose hosts for the 2020 European Championship, which is expected to be played in 13 cities across Europe.

Zwanziger, who left as German federation president in March, will keep his FIFA executive board mandate, which runs through 2015.

Zwanziger currently heads a FIFA working group advising on anti-corruption and transparency reforms to the governing body's legal statutes.

UEFA's 53 member countries will elect several seats on the 17-member board at their next congress in London.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill is England's candidate.
