Gibraltar debuts in UEFA competition draws
NYON, Switzerland (AP) -Gibraltar's football president has seen his national teams included in UEFA competition draws for the first time, and says their entry into European football has "nothing at all to do with politics.''
Gareth Latin tells The Associated Press it was "a proud moment'' seeing Gibraltar's Under-19 and Under-17 teams placed in qualifying groups for their 2014 European Championships on Wednesday.
Gibraltar will play those matches only if it is accepted as a full UEFA member when Europe's 53 official football nations vote next May.
The British territory has had provisional member status since October after previous bids in a long campaign were blocked by neighboring Spain, which claims sovereignty.
Still, Gibraltar will make its official competitive debut in January, playing qualifiers in Nice, France, for the 2014 Futsal Euro.
