Drexel, Northwestern among NCAA Selection Sunday snubs
Drexel, Marshall, Northwestern were all snubbed for the NCAA tournament berths
A poor showing in its final week knocked Seton Hall out of tourney consideration
The Pac-12 regular season title wasn't enough for Washington to make the cut
Even in this, the strangest of bubble years, there were some questionable inclusions in the field of 68. Which teams have the biggest gripe (or most antipathy toward St. Bonaventure)?
Here's an (alphabetical) rundown:
Dayton (20-12, 9-7; RPI: 80, SOS: 68)
Too many bad losses to have the good work carry the Flyers into the field. They will long regret the two blown opportunities against Xavier and the awful loss at home to Rhode Island.
Drexel (27-6, 16-2; RPI: 67, SOS: 213)
This one's another vote against weak schedules. The Dragons had a soft nonconference slate and the CAA was down this season, making their 25-2 closing stretch and regular-season title not enough.
Marshall (20-13, 9-7; RPI: 48, SOS: 24)
If they had played Memphis tougher in the finale, would that have been enough? Maybe not with a 12-13 mark against the top-200.
Miami (19-12, 9-7; RPI: 60, SOS: 43)
The Canes had big wins at Duke and over Florida State, but only had one other top-100 win. In the end, they needed to beat the Seminoles again in the ACC quarterfinals and couldn't do it.
Mississippi State (22-11, 8-8; RPI: 75, SOS: 78)
Too many disappointing losses down the stretch of an underachieving season. Public team chemistry issues didn't help.
Northwestern (18-13, 8-10; RPI: 63, SOS: 20)
They didn't beat anyone but Michigan State despite countless chances. 1-10 vs. top 50.
Seton Hall (20-12, 8-10; RPI: 68, SOS: 49)
A bad final week, with two really hurtful losses and then an early exit at MSG, unraveled what was a pretty decent profile to that point.
Tennessee (17-14, 10-6; RPI: 86, SOS: 35)
Too many slipups for the committee to ignore. The SEC quarterfinal loss to Ole Miss was a killer.
Washington (21-10, 14-4; RPI: 71, SOS: 92)
The Huskies made history as the first major-conference champ to miss the NCAAs. The Pac-12 regular-season title wasn't enough in a terrible year for the league. 0-5 vs. top 50.
