PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates and right-handed pitcher Jeff Karstens have agreed to a one-year contract.

The deal, announced Thursday is for $2.5 million, with another $1 million in incentives available. Karstens was officially a free agent after the Pirates opted not to tender him an offer following the 2012 season. The 30-year-old went 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 19 games last year, including 15 starts. He also missed significant time with separate injuries to his hip, groin and shoulder.

Karstens gives the club needed insurance after free agent left-hander Francisco Liriano injured his right arm last month, negating the two-year agreement between Liriano and the team.

The Pirates also announced Thursday they are inviting former first-round picks Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon to spring training next month.
