Tour de France at a glance
MARSEILLE, France (AP) - A brief look at Wednesday's 5th stage of the 100th Tour de France:
Stage: The fifth stage took riders on a 142-mile trek over a mostly flat course along the Mediterranean rim from Cagnes-sur-Mer to Marseille. A breakaway attempt by six riders was overtaken in the last few miles.
Winner: Mark Cavendish. The "Manx Missile'' got back into his sprinting groove to lead a final burst to victory in the last several hundred yards of the stage.
Yellow Jersey: Australia's Simon Gerrans, by finishing in the main pack with the same time as Cavendish, held onto the lead a day after his Orica GreenEdge squad won the team time trial. Gerrans leads teammates Daryl Impey of South Africa in second and Swiss rider Michael Albasini in third, each with the same time.
Stat of the day: 24. The number of Tour stage wins in Cavendish's career. With one more, he would tie Andre Leducq - the Frenchman who got 25 stage wins in the 1920s and 1930s - for third on the all-time list.
Quote of the day: "Gert is one of the most intelligent guys I know. ... He reads'' - Cavendish, referring to his Belgian lead-out man, Gert Steegmans, who helped set up the Briton's stage victory.
Thursday's stage: Stage 6 features an even flatter ride along 110 miles from Aix-en-Provence to Montpellier, which also should favor sprinters.
