Texas quarterback busted for being drunk, fake ID

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A freshman backup quarterback at the University of Texas was arrested Saturday in Austin for public intoxication and carrying a fake driver's license.

Connor Brewer, 19, was taken into custody in the early morning hours by university police, said Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman Roger Wade. Court documents indicate Brewer was booked into the county jail, appeared before a justice of the peace court and released about 11 hours later, Wade said.

The charges are misdemeanors, university spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said. If convicted, Brewer could be fined up to $500 on each charge.

Brewer, from Scottsdale, Ariz., has been expected to contend for playing time next season. He did not play in 2012.

In his player profile on the University of Texas team website, Brewer says he hopes to become a lawyer after his playing days.

Texas coach Mack Brown said in a statement that the school is "disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing.''

"We've talked with his family and will continue to monitor the situation,'' Brown said. "Following the completion of the legal process, we will do what's best for the university, Connor and the team. We've always prided ourselves in our program's family atmosphere, and this will be handled within our family.''

The arrest came hours after Texas offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, a former Longhorn quarterback, acknowledged Friday night he was disciplined by the university for an inappropriate relationship with a student during the team's trip to play in the Fiesta Bowl after the 2008 season.
