ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Mario Pino has won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in voting by his fellow riders.

He beat out finalists Javier Castellano, Perry Compton, David Flores and Rodney Prescott in the announcement Friday.

The award, established by Santa Anita in 1950, honors the careers and personal character of individuals involved in thoroughbred racing.

Pino, Maryland's all-time leading rider, became racing's 10th winningest jockey in September when he notched his 6,471st victory. The 51-year-old jockey rode Hard Spun to second-place finishes in the 2007 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic that year.

Pino has won at least 140 races in every year of his career.

He is expected to accept the Woolf award, named for jockey George "The Iceman'' Woolf, at Santa Anita next month.
