Sahara Sky wins San Carlos Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Sahara Sky rallied from far off the pace to win the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes by three-quarters of a length at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Sahara Sky ran 7 furlongs in 1:21. 28 and paid $14.60, $6.20 and $4.

Capital Account returned $5.80 and $4.40, while Comma to the Top was head back in third and paid $5 to show.

Comma to the Top set a fast pace, with Sahara Sky lagging far back in the field of eight. At the top of the stretch, Sahara Sky went four-wide and surged closer to the front.

"He got a good trip and it was just about a perfect ride, you might say,'' Hall of Fame trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer said.

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Sahara Sky's career earnings to $356,680, with six wins in 14 starts.

The Lumber Guy, the heavy 9-5 favorite, finished seventh.

In the $75,000 Joe Hernandez Handicap for older horses, Unbridled's Note beat Chips All In by a nose to win.

Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Unbridled's Note ran 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course in 1:11.17 - 0.07 off the course record - and paid $3.60, $2.40 and $2.20 as the 4-5 favorite.

"He's better with a little bit of a target, but the pace scenario just didn't pan out like I thought it would,'' Nakatani said. "He ran a tremendous race either way.''

The 4-year-old Kentucky bred is trained by Steve Asmussen, whose stable has led the nation in races won five different times was just 2 for 23 coming into Saturday.

Chips All In returned $4.20 and $3.20, while 25-1 shot Tale of a Champion was another 3 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $6.40 to show.

The victory, worth $45,840, increased Unbridled's Note's career earnings to $457,581, with four wins in 10 starts.
