Sarach wins Sandy Blue Handicap at Del Mar
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Sarach caught favorite and early leader Pontchatrain in the homestretch under jockey Martin Garcia and went on to win the $95,700 Sandy Blue Handicap on Friday night at Del Mar.
Trainer Richard Mandella had also entered Sarach against much stiffer competition in Saturday's Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, but chose to run the 3-year-old filly Friday and the move paid off as she won the turf mile by a length in 1:33.94.
Sarach paid $8.20, $4.60 and $3.60. Long-shot Miss Empire returned $17.80 and $9.20, and Redressthebalance paid $6.20 to show. Pontchatrain faded to fourth.
Sarach earned $56,820 for the win, her fourth in 10 lifetime starts, to take her career to total to $246,562.
