Princess of Sylmar wins Alabama Stakes
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Princess of Sylmar won the $600,000 Alabama Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, beating Fiftyshadesofhay by 2 1/2 lengths.
Ridden by Javier Castellano, the Todd Pletcher-trained filly solidified her position as the nation's leading 3-year-old female and probably secured the eventual divisional championship. She also won the Kentucky Oaks and Coaching Club American Oaks.
"The Kentucky Oaks, the Coaching Club American Oaks, that's a pretty hard trifecta to win,'' Pletcher said. "So, I'll say that she definitely established herself as the champion 3-year-old filly. I thought she won pretty convincingly. I though she did it well within herself.''
Princess of Sylmar earned $360,000 for King of Prussia Stable and paid $3, $2.10 and $2.10, running 1 1/4 miles in 3:03.21. Fiftyshadesofhay returned $2.50 and $2.60, and Carnival Court paid $3.50 to show.
Earlier, Big Blue Kitten made a dramatic late run to win the $600,000 Sword Dancer Invitational. Joe Rocco Jr. rode the 5-year-old, who ran 1 1/2 miles over the turf course in 2:26.46 and earned $360.000 for Sarah and Kenneth Ramsey. The Chad Brown-trained Big Blue Kitten paid $7.90, $4.30 and $3.50. Twilight Eclipse finished second and Nutello was third of 12.
