Wishing Gate wins Autumn Miss at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Wishing Gate overcame a slow start to win the $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes by 11/4 lengths at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Ridden by Gary Stevens, Wishing Gate ran a mile on the turf in 1:34.67 and paid $4.80, $3.60 and $3.40 as the 7-5 favorite in the field of 10 2-year-old fillies.
She broke a step slow from the No. 10 post and was three-wide throughout the race.
"I hit the side of the gate pretty hard leaving there," Stevens said. "I rarely hear the announcer going into the first turn, but I think I heard Trevor (Denman) say, 'They're flying up front,' and I'm thinking, 'No they're not!' since I had her well in hand. She's a good filly, real push-button. I can put her where I want."
Journey On returned $10.40 and $8, while Charlie Em was another half-length back in third and paid $7 to show.
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Wishing Gate's career earnings to $305,344.
