HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Jockey Javier Castellano has won the third race at Gulfstream Park to break the North American single-season record for purse earnings.

Friday's victory pushed the 36-year-old jockey's purse earnings to $25,655,988, breaking the mark of $25,634,852 set last year by Ramon Dominguez, who was forced to retire in June after being seriously injured in a spill.

Castellano has more than 3,600 victories in his career, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with Ria Antonia last month at Santa Anita. This year, he won riding titles at Belmont and Saratoga. He's the two-time defending riding champion at Gulfstream.

Castellano says he's proud to break the record and be at the same level as Dominguez, whom he described as ''such a classy guy.''
