LONDON (AP) -Premier League struggler Newcastle was knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton for the second successive season on Saturday, going down 2-0 in the third round to the second-tier club.

Andrea Orlandi put the south-coast side side ahead in the 33rd minute, hooking the ball into the net with the outside of his boot after meeting Wayne Bridge's cross.

Injury-depleted Newcastle's prospects took a further turn for the worse when captain Shola Ameobi received a second booking for his late tackle on David Lopez in 63rd.

Brighton extended its lead in the 87th when Will Hoskins slotted the ball through goalkeeper Rob Elliot's legs after latching onto Lopez's through ball.

"We've done what we set out to do - not get fazed because it was a Premier League team coming down,'' Hoskins said.

Last January, Brighton beat Newcastle in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Newcastle is 15th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone, while Brighton is ninth in the League Championship.

"We didn't have enough quality players on the pitch today ... the younger players have put as much effort in as they could,'' Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said.
