Marvin Sordell scored twice in the second half at Sunderland - the first from the penalty spot - to give Bolton a 2-0 victory and fourth round meeting with Everton.
Stoke will play Premier League champion Manchester City next after Jon Walters scored twice in extra time to secure a 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace.
Fulham was also forced into extra time by Blackpool but Brede Hangeland's late header clinched a 2-1 victory.
Wigan relied on Mauro Boselli's first-half goal to win 1-0 at Bournemouth, while Queens Park Rangers beat Premier League rival West Bromwich Albion by the same score.
