PARIS (AP) -Rennes beat visiting Montpellier 2-0 to reach the League Cup final on Wednesday and stay on course for its first major trophy since winning the French Cup 42 years ago.

Rennes will play Saint-Etienne in the final on April 20 at Stade de France.

An early goal from winger Julien Feret and a second-half effort from striker Mevlut Erding were enough for Rennes.

Feret capped a sweeping move in the seventh minute with a neat finish past goalkeeper Laurent Pionnier and Erding pounced in the 51st when he ran onto a pass from winger Jonathan Pitroipa.

On Tuesday, Saint-Etienne beat Lille 7-6 in a penalty shootout to remain on track for its first major trophy since clinching the French league title 32 years ago.
