LONDON (AP) -Queens Park Rangers broke its transfer record to sign striker Loic Remy from Marseille on Wednesday, boosting the London club's hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season.

The France international is reported to have joined QPR for 8 million pounds ($12.9 million), doubling the club's previous transfer record - the signing of Djibril Cisse in January 2012.

The 26-year-old Remy has agreed to a 4 1/2-year deal with the last-place club, though the club did not disclose financial details.

"He's quick, can score goals and makes great runs,'' QPR manager Harry Redknapp said. "His movement is excellent. He's got the potential to be a really outstanding striker.''

Remy had been expected to join Premier League rival Newcastle after the club had a bid for the forward accepted last week, but QPR reportedly offered him a higher salary.

Remy, who has scored four goals in 17 starts for France, is available for selection in QPR's match against West Ham on Saturday, subject to international clearance.
