England players offer to help Gascoigne

LONDON (AP) - English national team players have offered to provide support for Paul Gascoigne after he was admitted to a clinic to receive treatment for alcoholism.

Fears for the health of the former England star - known as "Gazza'' - grew over the weekend after he was pictured in ill health while addressing an audience.

England captain Steven Gerrard says "we've spoken to the FA (Football Association) and we've made it clear we are able to help if needed.''

England coach Roy Hodgson believes Gascoigne requires "some quite severe action,'' adding, "hopefully he will come out the other side a fitter and stronger person.''

Gascoigne, who starred for England at the 1990 World Cup, has been plagued by alcohol and mental-health problems since quitting the game in 2005.
