ATHENS, Greece (AP) -Struggling Greek club Panathinaikos has signed former Argentina striker Luciano Figueroa in an effort to improve its weak scoring record.

The club gave no details of the deal with the 31-year-old Figueroa, who moves from Emelec in Ecuador. Figueroa is expected to remain with Panathinaikos until the end of the season with an option to extend the deal for an additional year.

Normally a title contender, Panathinaikos has sunk to eighth place in the 16-team league, with 26 points from 21 matches and only 22 goals scored.

Olympiakos leads the league with 54 points and 45 goals.

Figueroa, who last played for his country in 2005, scored nine goals in 15 appearances for Argentina.
