MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Ryan Giggs will make his 1,000th senior competitive appearance after being selected in Manchester United's starting line-up to play Real Madrid in the second leg of the last-16 Champions League match on Tuesday.

It will be the 39-year-old midfielder's 932nd match for United, where he has spent his entire career since making his debut in 1991. Giggs has also played 64 times for Wales and made four appearances for Britain at last year's London Olympics.

Wayne Rooney was surprisingly left out of United's starting line-up by manager Alex Ferguson, with Portugal winger Nani being preferred.

Man United and Madrid drew 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg last month.
