After delay, FIFA to intensify stadium monitoring
SAO PAULO (AP) - FIFA says it will intensify the monitoring of the stadiums being prepared for the upcoming Confederations Cup after local organizers delayed the finish date of the venue hosting the opening match in Brasilia.
FIFA says the "daily and on-site monitoring of the stadium construction works'' at the six Confederations Cup venues "will be intensified.''
Football's governing body met with Brasilia authorities and the local 2014 World Cup organizing committee in the nation's capital Tuesday and said it will return for a new inspection visit at the Estadio Nacional in two weeks.
Brasilia officials guaranteed they will have the stadium ready for the test events needed ahead of the warm-up tournament that begins June 15.
The stadium's delivery date changed from Sunday to May 18 because of problems with the field.
