ISTANBUL (AP) -FIFA has called on its referees at the Under-20 World Cup to use the vanishing spray more sparingly in order to keep game interruptions short.

The spray marks a white line on the grass where teams defending a free kick must stand, preventing them from moving closer to the ball. The line disappears after 45 seconds.

FIFA technical study group member Mixu Paatelainen says "it's a great tool ... but it's important that the game flows, the pace of the game carries on and there are not too long stops. The spray is not there to be used every time but in certain moments.''

The spray has been used in South American competitions before and is being applied for the first time in a FIFA tournament on a trial basis.
