NEW YORK (AP) - Teen star Mary Cain won the Wanamaker Mile on Saturday in the Millrose Games.

The 17-year-old Cain, from Bronxville, finished in 4 minutes, 27.73 seconds at the Armory to beat second-place Treniere Moser by more than a second. Cain turned professional in November.

Cain was concerned about the quick early tempo set by Heather Kampf.

''There was part of me that said, `I kind of want to go with the rabbit,''' Cain said. ''But honestly, one thing I struggle with a lot is really just competing, being in a pack, running with a lot of bodies. I'm still not used to it. So the goal today was to compete and to race smart. And that's what I did.

She will run in 1,500 meters in the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 23.

''I have a lot of confidence,'' Cain sad. ''I'm just excited to compete, and run well. And hopefully I make the team, but we'll see how it goes.''

On the men's side, eight-time Wanamaker Mile winner Bernard Lagat set an unofficial American indoor record, winning the inaugural Paavo Nurmi 2,000 meters in 4:54.74.

The 39-yeat-old Lagat beat Cam Levins by a margin of 0.61 seconds. Lagat credited pacesetter Pat McGregor with setting a controlled early tempo, allowing Lagat to conserve energy for the final laps.

''I give props to (McGregor),'' Lagat said. ''He took the pace nicely and that is the key to running fast. Someone has to not take it too crazy. So it (left) me with still a lot of energy to close.''

Will Leer won the men's edition of the Wanamaker in 3:52.47, Lalane Gordon took the 300 in 32.47, and Marvin Bracy won the 60 in 6.50. In women's events, Ajee Wilson took the 800 in 2:01.81, Shaunae Miller won the 300 in 36.10, and Michelle-Lee Ahye took the 60 in 7.13.

In the pole vault, Mark Hollis won at 18 feet, 4 1/2 inches (5.60 meters).
