CNNSI.com Serves as Online Companion for “Sports Illustrated’s 20th Century Sports Awards” For release: July 8, 1999
CNNSI.com, home of Sports Illustrated on the World Wide Web, will be the online companion to “Sports Illustrated’s 20th Century Sports Awards,” the premier event of 1999 commemorating sports in the 20th century, to be broadcast live from Madison Square Garden on Dec. 2. CBS will air the two-hour primetime special at 9 p.m. (ET). CNNSI.com will provide extensive editorial content from the magazine and several interactive features leading up to and during the event. This week’s SI features the 20 ‘Favorite Athletes’ of the century and the list and a companion photo gallery are currently accessible at http://cnnsi.com/centurys_best/galleries/top20/main/. Sports Illustrated editors have reviewed, debated and identified their nominations for the century’s premier performers, achievements and events across a variety of sports and categories. SI is producing a series of in-depth retrospective stories in the months leading up to the event and will publish a special double issue one week before the television event. CNNSI.com will present the stories online and provide such features as live chats with athletes being recognized and Q&A’s with the SI writers commemorating them. “Sports Illustrated’s 20th Century Sports Awards” television event will feature the most impressive assembly of sports personalities ever, as well as classic sports clips documenting the century’s historic sports events. The event will culminate in the presentation of the award winners as selected by Sports Illustrated. CNNSI.com will feature online chats with award recipients, behind-the-scenes audio and video clips, as well as links to an array of SI stories about the winners and participants. Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, Madison Square Garden and IMG will present the event and sponsors include Compaq Computer Cooperation, Chrysler Brand Motorola. CNNSI.com is Time Warner’s sports Web site featuring up-to-the-minute scores, news, statistics and analysis of U.S. and World and men’s and women’s sports, as well as fantasy sports, live video-streaming and a local sports section for more than 150 cities.
