Heart attack claims Woody Hayes
|
|
Woody Hayes, perhaps the greatest football coach in Big Ten history, dies at age 74.
Hayes used his volatile nature and a strong belief in the running game to win three
national titles and four Rose Bowl championships during 28 years at Ohio State. But
his career ended in disgrace in 1978. During the Gator Bowl game, a Clemson player
intercepted a pass and ran out of bounds, where Hayes attacked him in full view of
a national television audience. He was forced to resign shortly afterward.

Leonard completes comeback by upsetting Hagler
|
|
A 3-1 underdog in most venues, Sugar Ray Leonard wins a
surprising 12-round split decision over middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin
Hagler in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although Hagler is the aggressor throughout most of the
fight, Leonard is quicker and lands more blows, tiring out the champ in the later rounds.
The victory caps a remarkable comeback for Leonard, who had fought just one bout since retiring in 1982 because of a detached retina.
