Led by Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and a host of other pro basketball stars, the U.S. Olympic team thumps Croatia 117-85 to lock up the gold medal. Dubbed the "Dream Team" because of their roster of National Basketball Association all-stars, the Americans race through the games undefeated, beating their opponents by an average of 43.8 points a game.

Back problems force Larry Bird into retirement

Larry Bird, citing ongoing back problems, calls it quits after 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics. After leading Indiana State to the NCAA Tournament title game in 1979, the 6-foot-9 Bird won the NBA's Rookie of the Year Award and turned the Celtics into instant contenders. During his pro career, the popular three-time Most Valuable Player led Boston to three NBA titles. After five years in the Celtics' front office, he becomes coach of the Indiana Pacers in 1997.

Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent resigns

Fay Vincent steps down as baseball commissioner, just four days after major league owners approve a resolution seeking his resignation. Vincent, who became commissioner after A. Bartlett Giamatti's death in 1989, had been at odds with owners over his refusal to relinquish his authority in labor negotiations. After Vincent's resignation, Milwaukee Brewers owner Bud Selig is appointed interim commissioner.
