At the searing rate Greg Norman is going, this could 1976 all over again. Stormin' Norman continued his march to what would be his first Masters Tournament title on Friday, doubling his lead to four shots as the 60th Masters reached the halfway mark at the Augusta National Golf Club.

Norman's a happy camper

Norman's relaxed, but Faldo - with two Masters titles under his belt - isn't far back. Said Norman: ``I'm feeling very comfortable right now, and the course is playing tough, but good.''
Lucky breaks keep Mickelson in contention

Mickelson, a four-time All-American at Arizona State, spent some time after his round on the driving range. He said he felt he drove the ball pretty good with the exception of four holes - Nos. 1, 2, 9 and 10. He bogeyed the first two holes on the front nine and the first hole, No. 10, on the back.
Crenshaw disappointed in cut
Last updated April 12 1996 at 10 PM
Crenshaw was one of many big names, including other recent Masters winners, who didn't make the cut of 146 Friday. He is, however, only the sixth defending Masters champion to miss it - the first since Sandy Lyle in 1989. Tom Watson had his streak of making the cut snapped. He and Crenshaw were joined by '79 champ Fuzzy Zoeller, amateur Tiger Woods, four-time winner Arnold Palmer, Tom Kite and '88 champ Sandy Lyle.
Palmer still a crowd favorite, even when missing cut
Last updated April 12, 1996 at 9:50 PM
``I didn't play all that badly, I think I would have made the cut if I didn't have four three-putts today,'' Palmer said. ``My problem was I putted off the green (on No. 10) and three-putted too much. The secret to scoring well was getting the ball to the (correct) side of the hole. It's the kind of course where anyone can get real hot, most of these guys can make 3 and 15 with ease. I hit 13, but the ball bounced off to the right and into a ditch.''
Rookie Duval makes the cut
Last updated April 12, 1996 at 9:50 PM
David Duval Daily Diary:I shot an even-par 72 Friday for a 1-over-par 145 total and made the cut by one shot. I'm tied for 28th place, 13 shots off Greg Norman's lead.
Some players avoid eye contact with the leaderboard

If you see a Masters participant walking with his head down during a round, don't assume he just hit a bad shot or doesn't want to make eye contact with the gallery. He may be trying to avoid the ever-present scoreboards that dot the Augusta National Golf Club. Count Billy Mayfair and Ben Crenshaw among that number. Others, like Tom Lehman, want to know the latest news in the tournament.

From the quiet of the morning, the crowds built around the first tee. By the time Greg Norman and Phil Mickelson teed off as the last group, spectators were backed up 20-deep on the sides. Several thousand followed the pair as they walked down the fairway, a much younger crowd than Crenshaw's, looking for action.
