``The first time I came to Augusta, I was a student at Wake Forest. I peered through the fence. I thought, `Boy, I hope I get there some day,''' Arnold Palmer said Tuesday, which was a day of homecoming and celebration for the 66-year-old four-time Masters champion.

Art Wall (1965) and Gay Brewer, Jr. (1973) hold the course record with a 20. Hal Sutton is the defending champion; he shot a 23 last year. Sutton defeated David Edwards with a par on the third playoff hole.

Some female fans find golfers fair game

Though she's a Fred Couples fan, Valerie Spratlin wanted him to hook his second shot on the 18th hole Tuesday. A hook would have brought the 1992 Masters Tournament champion a little bit closer to Spratlin. Maybe she could even get a glance or perchance a comment from Couples.

Computer analysis of the 1996 Masters field by The Augusta Chronicle showed the average professional this year has been playing on the tour for nearly 18 years and earned more than $4 million. Last year alone, he earned $631,681.32.
