The British Amateur

Arguably the most memorable and emotional event in sports history took place not on a playing field but in an auditorium
called Younger Graduation Hall in St. Andrews, Scotland. On October 9, 1958, the Freedom of the City of St. Andrews was
conferred upon Robert Tyre Jones Jr. The community wished to honor Jones because, according to the presentation
speech made by Robert Leonard, Provost, St. Andrews, "we feel drawn to him by ties of affection and personal regard of
a particularly cordial nature, and because we know that he himself has declared his own enduring affection for this
place and for its people." Before Jones, the last American given the Freedom of the City was Benjamin Franklin in
1759.
