The U.S. Open
|
O.B. Keeler, the Atlanta Journal sports writer who accompanied Bobby Jones on most of his travels, described Jones' career in
two halves: "The seven lean years and the seven fat years." For seven years the young and immensely
talented Jones was picked by many to win every major he entered. But to his and his fans' frustration, he
won none -- until the 1923 U.S. Open. Jones' victory at Inwood on Long Island officially ended "the lean
years" and began "the fat years," during which he won 13 majors by his 28th birthday.
