Can Tiger Woods make it five majors in a row?
The world will find out in June when the U.S. Open is played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Woods, who won the Masters on Sunday to put an exclamation point on an incredible year, will return to the U.S. Open on June 14-17 after his historic win last year at Pebble Beach. He matched the 72-hole scoring record in the event and won by a record-shattering 15 strokes.
After the U.S. Open, the British Open is the next major on Woods' agenda, and this year's event will be held at Royal Lytham & St. Annes on July 19-22. Last year, at St. Andrews, Woods played four rounds in the 60s to eclipse the scoring record in relation to par and won by eight shots.
The final major of the year returns to the state of Georgia, where the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth will play host to the 2001 PGA Championship on Aug. 16-19. Woods is the two-time defending champion of the event, including last year's three-hole playoff win over Bob May at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
A year earlier, Woods won the PGA at Medinah Country Club by one shot over Sergio Garcia.
The PGA in Duluth is one of the highlights for a banner year of golf in the state of Georgia. In addition to the Masters and PGA, the U.S. Amateur and Walker Cup matches also are scheduled this year.
``I'm looking to play that Athletic Club,'' said Franklin Langham, who completed his first Masters on Sunday. ``I've played up there several times. I'm looking forward to the PGA there. I played well in the PGA last year. When the time comes, I'll get focused on that and get ready to go.''
Langham has the advantage of not traveling far from home as he lives in Peachtree City, near Atlanta. But playing at home doesn't make everything easier.
``A lot goes on,'' Langham said. ``I've done a lot of speaking engagements this week. And I've done a lot of interviews. I don't mind it, but it makes for longer weeks.''
This marks the second time the tournament has been held at the Atlanta Athletic Club. In 1981, Larry Nelson won the event.
For now, though, the PGA Tour heads to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where the Worldcom Classic - The Heritage of Golf will be played this week. The last Masters champion to win at Harbour Town a week after winning the green jacket was Bernhard Langer in 1985.
