LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez is attending her first Masters Tournament, and she weighed in on the side of Augusta National Golf Club regarding the female membership issue.
"For a woman to be a member here, they should be invited," Lopez said. "I don't think they should force their way in here. I wouldn't want to be that person. I want the guys to want me here, not just push my way in."
Lopez, an Albany, Ga., resident, has frequently been mentioned as a possible choice for membership if the club decides to invite a woman. She has played the course twice, once shooting 78 from the Masters tees.
If asked, would she accept a membership at Augusta?
"I would say yes, I would, but I don't want to pay all the bills," she said. "There's a prestige in being here. There's so much tradition, and I believe in tradition."
Lopez doesn't believe the debate about Augusta's all-male membership has much merit in today's world.
"For one woman to be a member of Augusta to me doesn't solve any problems with women," she said.
