For the first time, CBS will air a pre-Masters Tournament special, The Life And Times Of Bobby Jones, on Sunday, April 7, the day before Masters Week and the 60th tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club.

Noted actor Sean Connery, a Scotsman famous for his portrayal of James Bond, narrates the special, based on the Sid Matthew book which is currently on The New York Times best-seller list. The special will air from 2 to 3 p.m., before the final round of the BellSouth Classic at Atlanta Country Club.

Jones, who died at age 69 in 1971, was the co-founder of the Masters and won the Grand Slam in 1930.

Matthew, a Tallahassee, Fla., attorney and noted Jones historian, gathered film footage of Jones over a 15-year period and completed a two-hour documentary early last year. Included is a rare look at Jones receiving the Freedom of the City of St. Andrews medal, an honor once bestowed upon Benjamin Franklin.

Matthew said in November that he sold the documentary to Callaway Golf, which distributed it for network telecast. The book, which was published in November, has 298 pages with over 330 photographs, 80 of which have never been published.

Brian Lewis, the publisher of the Jones book, said that Matthew visited Connery in Edinboro, Scotland, for the narration, and that Connery donated his speaker's fee to the Jones Scholarship, an annual exchange between Emory and St. Andrews where golf aptitude is not a prerequisite.Jones, who died at age 69 in 1971, was the co-founder of the Masters and won the Grand Slam in 1930.
