When Greenbrier High School's soccer program needed to raise some money, Amanda Lewis turned to a family friend -- 1998 Masters champion Mark O'Meara.
``I knew he would do it,'' Amanda, 15, said. ``He helps out with a bunch of different charities.''
So the Greenbrier High sophomore contacted O'Meara and asked whether he would donate items for a possible auction. In response, O'Meara sent a pin flag with the Masters logo, a 1999 PGA Tour book and a photo of him kissing the Claret Jug after winning the 1998 British Open -- all autographed.
``I just asked him to send something,'' Amanda said.
An auction will be held to raise money for the soccer program. Sealed bids will be accepted on each item until Thursday with the opening held April 16. Bids can be mailed to the school at 5114 Riverwood Parkway, Evans, Ga., 30809.
The Lewis family has known the O'Meara family for seven years. The O'Mearas stay in the Lewis' home during the Masters, and Amanda attended the champion's dinner with the golfer and his family last year.
The soccer program already has raised $6,000 through other fund-raisers, but that will not cover all the costs for uniforms, equipment, transportation, tournaments and summer camp, said Donnie Rogers, head soccer coach.
``Hopefully, this will help us out,'' Rogers said of the auction.
Greenbrier High Principal Gloria Hamilton said she thinks the items will do well in the auction.
``I think we're going to get a good reaction,'' she said.
