Hole 8
Par 5, 550 Yards
Like all the par 5 holes at the National, this one can be reached in two but the fairway bunker must be avoided. The new green, which nearly duplicates the original one, which was changed in 1956, puts some spice into the hole.

How Byron Nelson plays this hole
1. I played No. 8 well, but I was always careful to avoid trouble on the left side of the hole.
2. If you go right you have a chance to pitch up and make four.
3. There were very few players who reached the eighth hole in two (back then). You didn't do it consistently.
Historical Note
In a playoff against Ben Hogan to decide the 1942 Masters, Nelson fell behind early. But he took the lead for good when he eagled the par-5 eighth after his approach finished feet away.
