ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Barry Bonds waited 17 years to participate in the World Series. He wasted little time making an impact.

Bonds became the 26th player to homer in his first World Series at-bat when he connected in the second inning against Anaheim's Jarrod Washburn in Saturday night's opener.

Washburn got behind 2-0 in the count. Bonds swung and missed at his third pitch, then lined an inside fastball over the right-field wall, a drive estimated at 418 feet.

Atlanta's Andruw Jones was the last player to homer in his first Series at-bat, connecting in his first two against Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees in the 1996 opener.

Bonds, who set the season home run record with 73 in 2001, has five home runs in the postseason, one short of the single postseason record shared by Bob Robertson (1971), Lenny Dykstra (1993), Ken Griffey Jr. (1995), Bernie Williams (1996), Jim Thome (1998) and Troy Glaus (2002).

Bonds' homer put the Giants ahead 1-0. Reggie Sanders, in a 5-for-34 postseason slump, homered later in the second inning to give San Francisco a 2-0 lead.

Glaus homered in the bottom half against the Giants' Jason Schmidt, becoming the 27th player to homer in his first Series at-bat, then homered again in the sixth to tie the postseason record.

Bonds struck out on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth inning and grounded to first base on the first pitch leading off the sixth, hitting a one-hop smash to Scott Spiezio. With the Giants ahead 4-3 and one out and no one on in the eighth, Scott Schoeneweis walked Bonds on four pitches.
