R-E-S-P-E-C-T Bonds sets record for most walks in a World SeriesPosted: Saturday October 26, 2002 8:17 PMUpdated: Saturday October 26, 2002 10:11 PM
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Barry Bonds walked twice in Game 6 on Saturday night to set a record with 12 in a World Series. Babe Ruth (1926) and Gene Tenace (1973) previously held the mark. With a runner on first and two outs in the first inning, Angels manager Mike Scioscia decided to have pitcher Kevin Appier put Bonds on base. The move paid off when Benito Santiago fouled out to end the inning. Bonds then walked on five pitches to lead off the fourth against Appier. Bonds' 26 walks in the postseason are also a record. He has been intentionally walked seven times in his first Series, tying Bernie Williams' career mark. Intentional walks became an official statistic in 1955.
Bonds set major league records this season with 198 walks and 68 intentional passes.
