STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Justin Wayne gave Stanford another strong pitching performance as the Cardinal defeated Southern California 5-3 Saturday to advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., next week.

Wayne (9-1) allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings. He struck out 12 and walked two as the Cardinal, winners of their last nine, completed a two-game sweep of the best-of-3 series.

Tony Cogan pitched the ninth, allowing one run and one hit, to record his eighth save.

Stanford's Jason Young pitched a shutout against Southern California (36-26), the defending national champions, on Friday.

Nick Day had two hits for Stanford (48-13), which will be making its third trip to the College World Series in the last five years.

Trojans starter Justin Lehr (7-3) allowed five runs and six hits in six-plus innings.

Craig Thompson doubled home a pair of runs and Jeff Rizzo also doubled home a run to give Stanford a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Seth Davidson, who had two hits, tripled and scored on Dominic Correa's single to cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth.

Eric Munson hit his 15th home run of the season in the sixth to bring the Trojans within 3-2.

Day and Edmund Muth hit back-to-back triples, and Eric Bruntlett singled to end Lehr's day and give Stanford a 5-2 edge in the seventh.

Carlos Casillas doubled and scored on an infield grounder for the Trojans in the ninth.

Stanford, national champions in 1987 and 1988, won its last 16 home games, and 21 of its last 22 overall.

The Trojans had won its last nine consecutive postseason elimination games before Saturday.
