Nebraska's Hopper out for CWS

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska first baseman Matt Hopper will miss the College World Series with a broken bone and torn ligament in his left thumb.

Hopper injured the thumb while tagging out a runner in Richmond's 6-2 win Saturday in the Lincoln NCAA super regional. He did not play Sunday when the Cornhuskers won the best-of-three series with an 11-6 victory.

Coach Dave Van Horn said Hopper would have surgery on the thumb this week.

"I'm disappointed that he won't be able to play in the College World Series," Van Horn said.

Hopper is tied for second on the team with 49 RBIs and third in home runs with nine. He hit 21 homers his freshman season in 2000. He's also been playing with torn ligaments and cartilage in his right shoulder since injuring it April 5.

Van Horn said Hopper will have surgery on the shoulder later this summer.
