Cabrera signs minor league contract Posted: Friday July 03, 1998 09:24 AM
COLONIE, New York (AP) -- Six years after his memorable hit allowed the Atlanta Braves to win the National League pennant, Francisco Cabrera has signed a contract with the independent minor league Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs. The team announced the signing late Thursday night, and Cabrera will be added to the roster next week. Diamond Dogs general manager Charlie Voelker said Cabrera, 31, contacted the club about 10 days ago. "He's really excited about coming here," Voelker said in Friday's Daily Gazette of Schenectady. Cabrera spent parts of five seasons in the majors with the Braves and Toronto Blue Jays, and had a career .254 batting average. He is probably best known for his two-run, two-out, bases-loaded single that gave Atlanta a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series. Atlanta went on to lose the World Series that year to the Blue Jays in six games. Cabrera left the Braves in 1993 and since then has played in Japan and Mexico. He played in Taiwan last year.
