KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- One day after the major league All-Star Game ended without a winning team, the Frontier League found a way to settle things. The independent league's 10th annual All-Star Game was tied 4-4 after nine innings Wednesday night. Mindful of the criticism commissioner Bud Selig received Tuesday night after the major league All-Star Game was ended as a 7-7 tie after 11 innings, the Frontier League's owners and directors had decided Wednesday morning to use a home run derby if their game was tied. It was needed and Brody Jackson of the River City (Mo.) Rascals gave the West Division the win through the home run derby at Homer Stryker Field. Three batters from each division got five pitches in the home run derby. Brody gave the West a 2-1 lead and that stood up when the last batter, Joe Gerber of the host Kalamazoo Kings, hit two balls to the warning track but couldn't get one out of the park. Attendance at the 5,200-capacity park was announced at 4,498.
"The Frontier League prides itself on providing a fan-friendly atmosphere," commissioner Bill Lee said before the game. "Home run derbies are exciting events and great crowd-pleasers."
