![]() No Mo Palmeiro to replace Boston's Vaughn at All-Star GamePosted: Friday July 03, 1998 12:07 AM
BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Red Sox first baseman Mo Vaughn said Thursday night he would not be able to attend next week's All-Star Game in Denver because of a strained right hamstring. He was replaced on the roster by Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro. In a statement distributed in the Fenway Park press box during Boston's game against Montreal, the team said Vaughn would miss a chance to make his third All-Star appearance due to "his desire to recover and be ready to help the Red Sox in the second half of the season." Vaughn hurt his leg running out an infield hit in the second inning of last Friday's game against Florida. He left the game in the fourth inning and has not played since then. Vaughn was not available for comment Thursday night. "I told him I was behind him all the way. It's his decision, and I know it's a tough decision," Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said. "He's still an All-Star. You can't take that away from him. But he's hurt. He needs to get healed." The American League said that Palmeiro, the Orioles' first baseman, will take Vaughn's place on the AL squad. Palmeiro has appeared in two All-Star games, the last in 1991 with Texas. He was the AL player of the month for June, and is hitting .300 with 26 homers and 72 RBIs.
