NEW YORK (AP) -- San Diego Padres ace Kevin Brown remains a candidate to start Game 4 of the World Series even though he was running a fever from a sinus infection Sunday night. "We will keep an eye on him and see how he makes progress here in the next couple of days," manager Bruce Bochy said before Sunday night's Game 2. "But no question, he is a strong possibility for Game 4." Brown was hardly the only ailing Padres player. Andy Ashby, who started Sunday night, had a sore throat and a cold. Second baseman Quilvio Veras had a groin injury and shortstop Chris Gomez a calf injury. Both started. Greg Vaughn was used as the designated hitter rather than starting in left field because he was feeling pain in his left quadriceps, which he strained in the opening game of the NL championship series. Vaughn drove in three runs on two homers in Saturday night's 9-6 loss to the Yankees. If Brown starts Wednesday night in San Diego, he will do so on three days' rest, as he did during the division series against Houston. He also made a surprise appearance in relief in Game 5 of the NL championship series against Atlanta, allowing a three-run homer to Michael Tucker in a 7-6 loss. Bochy said Brown had a fever Saturday night in the Series opener against the New York Yankees. He also got hit on the left shin by Chili Davis' line drive in the second inning. Brown took a 5-2 lead into the seventh, but ended up with a no-decision. Reliever Donne Wall allowed Chuck Knoblauch's three-run homer and Mark Langston allowed Tino Martinez's grand slam.
