8/24/86:
McGwire shot up through the minors faster than his home
runs exit the park. He hit 24 dingers and drove in 106 runs
at Modesto in 1985, and the following year combined for 23
homers and 112 RBI at Huntsville and Tacomaall of
which prompted the A's to
give McGwire an express ticket to the bigs. Four days after
his August 20 callup, McGwire hits his first major league
home run, a two-run shot off Detroit's
Walt Terrell at Tiger Stadium. The blast travels past the
440-foot sign in dead center and helps
spark a five-run fifth for Oakland, which wins
8-4.
