This week in McGwire HR history

McGwire enters the record books as the most prolific rookie home run hitter in history. In the sixth inning in Anaheim, he knocks a two-run shot off California's Don Sutton for No. 39. The old record was set by Boston's Wally Berger in 1930 and tied by Cincinnati's Frank Robinson in 1956.

They Said It: McGwire, after finishing the '87 season with 49 homers
"It really took a toll on me. Players who have played for 15 years haven't had to deal with what I dealt with. I never wanted to be in the public eye. I think I've come to terms with things. I'm realistic. I don't know that I'll ever hit 49 home runs again. If I do, great. But I do know that nobody's ever averaged 49 home runs a year."
