The American League might as well pre-order the inscription for the Rookie of the Year trophy because there's no doubt who the winner will be. On this day, McGwire gets within one homer of the major league rookie record with No. 37, a bases-empty shot, in Oakland against the Angels' Don Sutton.

They Said It: Sutton, after unluckily giving up No. 39 on August 14, 1987, to break the rookie record
"He appears to be a kid with no peaks and no valleys. He's not going to get way up or way down on himself, and that's what it takes to put up good numbers year after year."
