Chances of a Subway Series increase as both teams win

NEW YORK (AP) - No wonder some of the Yankees looked a little sleepy Wednesday. They stayed up late to watch the Mets.

"They have a good chance of doing some great things in the playoffs," Darryl Strawberry said.

Does that mean Subway Series?

"It's too early right now to think about that," Strawberry said. "We have our work cut out and they have their work cut out. So far, so good."

Strawberry was 0-for-2 with a walk as the Yankees opened the postseason with an 8-0 rout of Texas on Tuesday night. Then he watched the Mets' 8-4 win at Arizona, a game that ended at 2:05 a.m. ET.

It was the Mets' first postseason appearance since 1988, when they lost Game 7 of the NL championship series 6-0 at Los Angeles. Strawberry was 0-for-4 in that one, a game that seemed like a very long time ago.

"I've accomplished a lot; they've accomplished a lot," he said.

Andy Pettitte, the Yankees' Game 2 starter, turned on a TV when he got home and saw Edgardo Alfonzo's tiebreaking grand slam in the ninth inning.

"I was so tired, I couldn't hold my eyes open," Pettitte said. "As soon as he hit the home run, I turned the TV off."

He, too, didn't want to think about a Subway Series just yet.

"They have a great team. I think they have a great shot at getting to the World Series," Pettitte said. "We have two teams to worry about before we get to the World Series. That's a little down the road right now."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman decided against tuning in.

"I was listening to them on the radio driving home last night," he said. "I planned on watching it, until I got home last night and I saw my daughter, Grace, in bed with my wife. I couldn't turn on the TV, so I had to wait until this morning to find out about Alfonzo's grand slam."

Cashman admitted Subway Series thoughts run through his mind.

"It's a scary team," he said. "I'm sure those National League opponents they're going to have to go through, they're not comfortable facing them."
