    Mariners
      Edgar Martinez
Edgar Martinez is the machine that won't stop hitting for the Mariners. AP
  • Despite trading Ken Griffey Jr. in offseason, won a franchise-best 91 games this season to get into the playoffs on the final day of the season.
  • Led the AL West most of the entire season and were ahead of Oakland by seven games on Aug. 11. But the A's caught them in the next-to-last day although the Mariners were 19-10 in September and October.
  • Moyer lasted 1 2/3 innings in the shortest start for a Mariners' starter this season Thursday against Texas and complained of shoulder problems afterward. Manager Lou Piniella is not sure of Moyer's status for the playoffs.
  • LF Rickey Henderson, who has been the leadoff batter after being signed as a free agent May 17 following his release by the New York Mets, was on the bench Sunday in Anaheim because hit .183 in final month. Cameron replaced him in the leadoff spot.
  • Mariners made the playoffs for the third time in franchise history, all under Piniella. They also won the division titles in 1995 and 1997. They beat the New York Yankees and lost to Cleveland in the ALCS in '95, and lost their first series to Baltimore in '97.
  • First-year CEO Howard Lincoln increased the team's payroll to $59 million this year and hired Pat Gillick to replace Woody Woodward as GM. In addition to making the trade that brought Cameron from the Reds and bringing in Sele and Sasaki as free agents, Gillick signed Rhodes, Olerud, Javier and McLemore.
  • The Mariners averaged 38,868 fans in their first full season at Safeco Field for their second-highest attendance in history (3,148,317). They drew 3,192,237 in 1997.
  • The futures of Rodriguez and Piniella are murky in Seattle. Rodriguez is a free agent after the World Series, and Piniella, who has been in Seattle for eight seasons, is in the final year of his contract.
  • Sasaki, Japan's all-time saves leader, came to the United States as a free agent at 32 and set a major league record for saves for a rookie with 37 in 40 opportunities.
  • White Sox
Frank Thomas Frank Thomas regained his MVP form in 2000. AP
  • White Sox scored more runs (978) than any team in the majors (six per game) and were the best road team in baseball with a 49-32 record.
  • Young players like Konerko, Ordonez and Lee continued to develop and Thomas put two subpar years behind him to set personal highs in homers and RBIs.
  • Starting pitching is banged up headed into the postseason, so the White Sox will rely on their offense and their bullpen, headed by Foulke.
  • Fielding has improved with the key additions of Perry and Valentin on left side, even though Valentin had 36 errors.
  • The White Sox had winning records against all but two AL teams. They moved into first place on April 14 and never left and played some of their best baseball against the Yankees and Indians.
  • The biggest reason for their success perhaps is the low-key approach of manager Jerry Manuel, the Gandhi disciple, whose quiet leadership has guided the team to just the seventh playoff appearance in franchise history.
  • Things To Look For
  • Emergency room. Injuries have thrown White Sox rotation into disarray. Game 1 starter Sirotka has a sore elbow, Eldred is pitching with a five-inch screw in his right elbow, and Baldwin missed two weeks with a sore shoulder and was rocked for five runs and six hits in three innings Sunday.
  • A-Rod's time. While Griffey can only watch, Rodriguez gets the October stage to himself in Seattle. With free agency looming, Rodriguez can add a few more millions to his next deal with a big postseason.
  • Cameron's return. Cameron, Griffey's replacement, wants to do damage against the team that traded him away. Cameron one time was thought to be the next star of the White Sox. They gave up on him and made a really good trade, getting Konerko from the Reds in exchange. Konerko key to White Sox's season.
