    Matchups
  • Rivalry really heated up July 8 when Clemens beaned Piazza in the nightcap of a rare, two-ballpark doubleheader. Piazza had homered in three straight games off the Rocket -- they'll meet up again in Game 2. The altercation prompted the Mets to block the Yankees from using the weight room at Shea Stadium, and also led the Mets to prohibit their players from traveling with Yankees to the All-Star game.
  • Yankees hold 11-7 edge in four years of interleague play. Overall, including spring training games and Mayor's Trophy exhibitions, Yankees lead 70-50 with one tie.
  • Jeter hit team-leading .407 vs. Mets.
  • Derek Bell led Mets at .417 with eight RBIs, but is out with a sprained ankle.
  • Hernandez and Hampton pitched well and won in their only start.
  • Benitez and Rivera each threw three scoreless innings.
  • Yankees were only 2-for-7 on steal tries.
  • Brooklyn-born Yankees manager Joe Torre played for the Mets and managed them from 1977-81. Bench coach Don Zimmer was the Mets' third baseman in their first game ever in 1962, and Yankees coaches Lee Mazzilli and Willie Randolph played for the Mets, too. Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre held the same job for the Mets when they last won the World Series in 1986. Gooden and Cone are former Mets aces.
  • Leiter began his major league career with the Yankees in 1987 and played with them until 1989.
  • Clemens was originally drafted by the Mets in June 1981, but did not sign.

    Mets
Mike Piazza Mike Piazza makes his World Series debut. AP
  • Trying to win first World Series championship since 1986.
  • Masters of postseason magic, especially in late innings. Agbayani launched game-winning homer in 13th vs. San Francisco in opening round. Payton hit go-ahead singles against the Giants and St. Louis in NLCS in Mets' final at-bat.
  • Hampton pitched 16 shutout innings to earn MVP award in NLCS -- the Mets hoped he would when they got him in the offseason for Houston.
  • Leiter starts Game 1 against the Yankees after Hampton pitched the opener in both NL playoff series.
  • Piazza, in his first big postseason contribution, hit .412 with two homers against St. Louis. He makes his first World Series appearance, as does Brooklyn-born Franco at age 40.
  • Alfonzo batted .444 and Zeile drove in eight runs during NLCS. ... In postseason for consecutive years for first time in team history. ... Their September slump is just a memory now. ... Contracts expire after the season for manager Bobby Valentine and GM Steve Phillips.
  • Yankees
Orlando Hernandez Orlando Hernandez has yet to taste a postseason defeat. AP
  • Trying to become first team to win three straight World Series championships since 1972-74 Athletics.
  • Have won 12 consecutive World Series games, tying the record set by their Murderers' Row teams in 1927, 1928 and 1932.
  • Beat Oakland in decisive Game 5 of Division Series, rebounded from Game 1 loss to defeat Seattle in ALCS. Have put aside questions, for now, of whether they're too old to win again.
  • At 8-0 lifetime, Hernandez is the only pitcher ever to win his first eight postseason decisions.
  • Rivera extended his scoreless streak to a postseason-record 33 1/3 innings before giving up a run to the Mariners.
  • Justice, acquired in late June from Cleveland, was ALCS MVP with eight RBIs.
  • ALCS roster included seven players obtained in midseason. Jose Canseco, another late pickup, was added for the World Series.
  • Lost final seven games of regular season. Like the Mets, the Yankees' late swoon has been forgotten.
  • Knoblauch was benched, then became DH in the playoffs. Torre plans to play the scattered-armed second baseman in the field at Shea.
  • Things To Look For
  • The Boss. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner hates to lose to the Mets, even in spring training. It will be hard for him to keep quiet if his team gets off to a slow start.
  • Piazza vs. Clemens. In case anyone thinks the Rocket will stop throwing inside to the Mets star, forget it. Let's just see how close he comes.
  • Bullpen battle. Mets feature better setup men, but Benitez is prone to postseason collapses. Yankees are shaky in the middle, but when they get to Rivera, it's over.
